Known limits
What Linyal 0.9.0 can’t do yet, or gets wrong, that you might meet in ordinary work, with what to do about each. This page changes with every release.
Inspect
- Checks not yet tuned
- Every check is still provisional, not yet tuned on real marks. On a wordmark, four letter checks show their figures without flagging. Nothing from a provisional check is printed in Present or the handover report, and angle figures aren’t printed either. Judge the readout yourself.
- An arc drawn by eye
- About one arc in 20,000 happens to match an exact piece of a circle. Inspect then reads it as exact, and can report a circle of the same size beside it as 0.2 to 0.3% off.
- A ring of dashes
- Can be split between two radii, so a finding names one dash.
- Turned stars and polygons
- A Star-tool star or regular polygon turned 15°, 30°, 60° or 75° gets angle findings it doesn’t get upright.
- An answer comes back
- Rarely, a finding you answered Intended returns after an edit that leaves the drawing as it was. Answer it again.
- What Inspect won’t read
- Live text, symbols, images, blends and meshes, more than 4,000 points or 500 items. The panel says what to do; see Measurements.
Logo files
- Appearance extras in mono and reversed
- An extra fill or stroke from the Appearance panel keeps its own colour, with no warning. Use Object › Expand Appearance on the logo, then Save as brand logo again.
- Gradients in mono and reversed
- A gradient or pattern leaves that version out, and the status line only says “1 variant skipped”. Expand it into solid shapes.
- A white gap outline
- In the reversed files the white outline takes the logo’s colour, so the parts can run together; the panel says so. A hidden white outline triggers the note too. To keep the gap, cut it out of the shapes with Pathfinder.
- Old files stay
- An export never removes files from an earlier one. Export into an empty folder to start clean.
- Spot colour tints
- A spot colour at a tint is read as the full colour.
- Strokes aligned inside or outside
- Illustrator writes them to SVG as filled shapes, not strokes.
CMYK print PDF
When the print PDF can’t be made, the other files are still written and the panel gives the first reason that applies, as “Print PDF left out: …”:
- “no CMYK build is stated for #F5F5F5”
- A colour the mark paints has no build. State one under Print values. It names the hex, not the colour’s name.
- Near-white
- Only pure white prints as paper. A near-white such as #F5F5F5 needs a build: 0 0 0 0 if it should be paper.
- “…a gradient or a pattern…”
- Expand it into solid shapes.
- “…a spot colour at a tint…”
- Make the tint a colour of its own, with its own build.
- “…not a plain filled or stroked path…”
- Live text, an image or a symbol. Outline or expand it, then save the logo again.
- “…more than one fill and one stroke…”
- An Appearance extra, effect, brush or stroke profile. Use Object › Expand Appearance, then save the logo again.
- “the mark is all white…”
- White prints as paper, so there is nothing to print. State a build for white if it should print as ink.
- “…restarting Illustrator usually fixes this”
- Illustrator couldn’t make the CMYK document, made it in RGB, or isn’t running menu commands. Restart Illustrator and export again.
- “what part of the mark draws could not be checked…”
- No specific fix yet. Restart Illustrator and export again.
The print PDF has no output intent and is not PDF/X. If your printer asks for PDF/X-4, make it from the colour PDF in Illustrator.
Wordmark
- Wordmark left out
- The panel gives the reason, such as “its artwork is no longer in the document; choose it again on the Brand screen”. Without the wordmark, the site has no lockups.
- A temporary document left open
- If Illustrator can’t close the export’s temporary document, the wordmark reads as left out even though its files were written. Close that document without saving and export again.
- An export that waited
- An export that waited for Linyal to finish reading the document still runs on the document you started it from, and brings that document back to the front.
Guideline website and PDFs
- Studio fonts
- Studio names the brand’s fonts but embeds none, and the Export screen doesn’t say so. Use Editorial, or tell your client which fonts to install.
- Editorial fonts
- A font that isn’t one of Linyal’s nine, without its files and the licence tick, is named, not embedded. The panel says which.
- Light brand colours
- On a light brand colour, Studio’s navigation and footer text is faint.
- PDFs need a browser
- The guideline PDF and the report PDF need Chrome, Edge or Brave, or Chromium on a Mac. Without one on a Mac, save the print page from Safari on a custom paper size of 508 × 285.75 mm for the guideline, or A4 or Letter for the report.
Brand Check
- Off-brand font
- Has no Fix. Change the font by hand.
- Rotated or grouped logos
- A rotated logo, or one inside another group, is not checked for size, distortion or clear space. It shows only “Rotated or nested: measured by bounding box”.
- Minimum size
- Only the print minimum is checked, not the digital one. The minimum is what you type in Details; Linyal never measures it.
- Colours
- Only solid fills are checked: not strokes, gradients or the colour of text.
Handover report
- “Out of date” too often
- The Present home marks the report out of date after changes that don’t alter it: any palette change, a colour map set to Itself, or exporting the logo files again. Export the report again.
- The site note
- After a report export, “Export the site again to carry this one” shows even when that site carries no report.
Licence and updates
- An outdated panel
- Activating a key says “Please update Linyal”. An active Pro licence doesn’t: Settings shows “Offline, using your cached licence” until Pro pauses on day 37. A Free panel is never told. Install the newest version when one is out.
- Activating offline
- The panel says it will retry, but it doesn’t. Press Activate again once you are online.
- Deactivating offline
- The panel shows Free, but the seat stays taken. Free it at linyal.com/deactivate.
- A slow start
- If the licence server takes longer than 1.5 seconds to answer when the panel starts, that session uses the last settings it saved.
Build and Windows
- Large Canvas
- In a Large Canvas document, Build’s grids come out ten times too large. Use a normal document for Build.
- Windows
- On Windows, photographs aren’t scaled down and HEIC photos can’t be picked. Tell us if anything else doesn’t work as it should.
